Renal FOOD SPIRAL® Meats: What You Need to Know

If you have chronic kidney or are on dialysis, your doctor or dietitian might have talked to you about your protein intake. Protein is often found in meat, poultry, and seafood. Some meat is better for you than others.

  • Poultry – low in saturated fats. Best prepare with the skin removed prior to cooking, baking, grilling, or broiling.
  • Fish and Seafood – low in fat and rich in heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. These help protect against heart disease.

It is important for you to eat protein foods with High Biological Value, or HBV. Protein foods with HBV have all of the essential amino acids our bodies need. Examples of protein foods with HBV are fish, eggs, meat, and milk.

  • At least 50% of your protein needs to be HBV protein.
  • 1 oz. of fresh, lean meat contains 7 grams of protein, 35-75 calories, and only 25 mg sodium.
  • 1 oz. of medium to high fat meat contains 5-8 grams of fat, 75-100 calories, and up to 350 mg of sodium.

In the Renal FOOD SPIRAL®, MEATS are divided into the three colors: green for “GO”, yellow for “CAUTION”, and red for “STOP”. The foods in the green and yellow sections are the healthiest. The foods in the red section have less nutritional value

Meats in the green section are assigned a Food Factor of 1 . Meats in the yellow section are assigned a Food Factor of 2 . Meats in the red section are assigned a Food Factor of 3 . Find out from your doctor or dietitian how many Food Factors you are allowed in a day.

By choosing more foods in the GO and CAUTION sections, you will be able to eat more foods than if you chose foods in the STOP section. You will also be making healthier choices. Most or all meats should be broiled, boiled, baked, roasted, stewed, grilled, or stir-fried.

Most GO meats are fresh, unsalted cuts of meat. Most CAUTION meats are canned or frozen meats. Most STOP meats are processed meats like hotdogs and deli meat.

Serving sizes matter.

  • 1 serving GO meats = 2 oz. or ¼ cup
  • 1 serving CAUTION meats = 1 oz.
  • 1 serving STOP meats = 1 oz.
