Why do we need fat in our diet? There are many reasons!
Not all fats are the same. There are different types of fat and each has a different effect on our body. Some fats are good for us, and some are not so good for us. The three main types of fat are monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, and saturated. Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can help lower levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol. Saturated fat is often associated with heart disease. Most individuals should aim for 50 g of fat per day.
In the Renal FOOD SPIRAL®, FATS are divided into the three colors: green for “GO”, yellow for “CAUTION”, and red for “STOP”. The foods in the green and yellow sections are the healthiest. The foods in the red section have less nutritional value
Fats in the green and yellow sections are assigned a Food Factor of 0 . Fats in the red section are assigned a Food Factor of 1 . Find out from your doctor or dietitian how many Food Factors you are allowed in a day.
By choosing more foods in the green and yellow sections, you will be able to eat more foods than if you chose foods in the red section. You will also be making healthier choices. Many of the fats in the green section are great to use in cooking.
Can you guess which fat falls under GO, CAUTION, and STOP??
1) 1 T Avocado
2) 2 t Olive Oil
3) 1 t salted Butter
