Why do we need dairy?
What if I’m lactose intolerant? There are many non-dairy items you can consume.
In the Renal FOOD SPIRAL®, Dairy/Non-Dairy is divided into the three colors: green for “GO,” yellow for “CAUTION,” and red for “STOP.” The foods in the green and yellow sections are the healthiest. The foods in the red section have less nutritional value.
Dairy and non-dairy in the GO section are assigned a Food Factor of 0 . Dairy and non-dairy in the CAUTION section are assigned a Food Factor of 1 . Dairy and non-dairy in the STOP section are assigned a Food Factor of 2 . Find out from your doctor or dietitian how many Food Factors you are allowed in a day.
By choosing more foods in the GO and CAUTION sections, you will be able to eat more foods than if you chose foods in the STOP section. You will also be making healthier choices.
Aim to consume low fat or reduced fat milk, dairy, and yogurt products.
Serving sizes matter.
