How To Improve Dry Mouth When On Dialysis

Posted on 18th Oct 2017

Dialysis is for people whose kidneys no longer work. It can help sustain life and make life better. However, they still face many problems. Dry mouth is very common for those on dialysis. People with kidney disease often have a strict fluid limit and you may also make less saliva. This leads to dry mouth and increased thirst. With less saliva, your teeth can be more prone to cavities and decay. Less saliva can also lead to bad breath, gum disease, and tooth loss. Dry mouth and gum disease can make it harder to eat which can cause weight loss and possible malnutrition.

If you are on dialysis, you should visit the dentist regularly and when any problems arise. If left untreated, problems with your teeth and gums can lead to infections, which can lead to more overall health issues.

Some Tips to Deal with Dry Mouth

  1. Try to limit the amount of salt and spicy foods in your diet as these foods can make your more thirsty and worsen dry mouth.
  2. Some drugs can also cause dry mouth or make you feel thirsty; Check with your doctor and ask about changing these medicines to another kind.
  3. Use sugar-free candy or gum to improve saliva flow.
  4. Keep cool!  This can help reduce thirst, especially in warmer weather.
  5. Use a humidifier to moisten the air while you sleep at night.
  6. Some product can relieve dry mouth – One product is called Biotene® mouthwash and toothpaste.
  7. Ice may be more satisfying than liquids to relieve thirst and dry mouth.

Be sure to talk to you doctor and dietitian about how much fluid you can have each day and any other tips they may have for helping your dry mouth.
